Darley recently unveiled its new Smart Panel II electronic pressure governor. The feature-rich system allows extraordinary control of any firefighting pump. Its four main components include a main display, controlling computer, and two quarter-inch male NPT pressure transducers. These can be easily integrated into an electronic controlled engine, providing control via the SAE J1939 electronic control logic.
The system is built around a bright, daylight-readable 7″ LED screen, which allows the user to easily monitor:
- Engine speed
- Engine coolant temperature
- Engine oil temperature
- 29.9 in/Hg suction vacuum to 300 psig pump intake pressure
- Accumulated engine hours
- Battery voltage
- 0-500 psig pump discharge pressure
- Pump operating hours
Visual and audible alarms can be set to alert users if any values cross a safety threshold. Built-in protection, for example, reduces engine speed in case of overheating or a low-water situation.
The Darley system is designed from the ground up to be easy to use. It incorporates tactile push-buttons and a rotary throttle knob that allow for use even when wearing heavy gloves. Two modes of operation are supported, Pressure Governor mode and Engine Governor Mode, with one button press to change between them. Pressure Governor Mode allows the user to select a desired discharge pressure. The controller will then vary the engine speed to maintain the desired pressure. Engine Speed Governor Mode allows the user to select a desired RPM for the engine, which the controller will then maintain. In the event that an unsafe spike in discharge pressure is detected, the engine speed will be reduced to keep the pressure at a safe level.
Additional features include self-diagnostics to detect failure of the pressure sensors or engine communication system, user-programmable preset to allow one-button access to your most common mode of operation, user-selectable units (Imperial or Metric), as well as multi-language support, and operation with either 12 or 24-volt systems (can be powered with 10 to 32 VDC), very low electrical load with less than 2A total current. The Electronic Pressure Governor is lightweight at less than 10 lbs. and IP65 ingress protected.
