Cancer rates among first responders have increased because of carcinogen exposure. Darley is working to develop a system utilizing ozone technology that will help reduce the threat of carcinogen exposure. Ozone has long been recognized by the EPA as the “best available technology” to reduce Group 3 VOC contaminants including benzene, beryllium and arsenic.
The new Darley Decon System converts certain chemicals to a hydrocarbon while increasing solubility of the chemical, which is then rinsed from a firefighter’s gear along with soot and soil. Ozone disinfection testing in the fire service continues to be conducted to benefit our firefighters and eventually reduce cancer rates.
