The fire pump is arguably the most important piece of equipment on an engine, and pump manufacturers have specific guidelines for keeping fire pumps in the best working order. We spoke with two W.S. Darley & Company pump experts, Greg Field, vice president of pump manufacturing operations, and Shawn Kelly, training manager, about the subject and they gave us five preventive maintenance tips to keep your fire pump in top shape.
W.S. Darley and Company has partnered with Ford to develop a tactical command vehicle based on the new Ford Bronco platform. Peter Darley, Darley’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, says the tactical command vehicle is based on a 2023 Ford Bronco Badlands 4×4 with a Sasquatch off-road package, powered by a six-cylinder gasoline engine and a 10-speed automatic transmission. Wheelbase on the rig is 116 inches, overall length is 189 inches, and overall height is 74 inches.
Atoka decided on a SLR 75 built on a Monarch heavy-duty custom chassis with a 62-inch four-door extended cab and a 10-inch raised roof seating five firefighters, three of them in SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) seats.
Travis County (TX) ESD No. 1 was seeking to replace a rear-mount aerial ladder quint with a more maneuverable mid-mount model and turned to Sutphen Corp. who built a SL 75 aerial ladder quint for the district.
Lexington County (SC) Fire Services has put a Sutphen SPH 100 aerial platform quint in service in its fleet of firefighting apparatus.
David Rea, Cortland’s chief, says the department wanted to replace a pumper that Cortland had outgrown in terms of how much equipment they wanted to carry. “We purchased a new rescue-pumper from Sutphen Corp. through the Ohio State Term Schedule, which is a cooperative purchasing program that Sutphen participates in,” Rea says.
Fire departments running small pumpers and utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) can choose from a wide variety of slip-in skid units for their rigs. The makers of skid units work closely with departments to develop the types of skids needed for specific applications as well as for general fire suppression from smaller platforms.
Meadville (PA) Fire Rescue & EMS had a 30-year-old aerial platform and a pumper that were starting to have maintenance issues, so the department put together a truck committee to spec out a quint that could fill the functions of both an engine and a truck. At the end of the committee’s work, the department decided to purchase a Sutphen SLR 75 quint aerial ladder.
The end result is a Sutphen SPH 100 foot aerial platform built on a Sutphen Monarch heavy duty custom chassis with a 62-inch extended four-door flat-roof cab.
Sutphen Corp. has delivered a SL 100 aerial ladder quint to Opelika (AL) Fire Department that will replace a 25-year old rear-mount aerial platform, which will be held in reserve.
Its fleet consists of an engine, a rescue-pumper, an aerial ladder platform, and three advanced life support (ALS) ambulances, with the fire suppression rigs all built by Sutphen Corp.
