The Mantua Township (NJ) Fire District was formed in October 2006 through the merger of four individually operated and governed fire companies: the Barnsboro Fire Company, the Mantua Volunteer Fire Company, the Centre City Volunteer Fire Company, and the Sewell Mutual Volunteer Fire Company.
Today, Mantua Township Fire District No. 1 comprises two stations. Fire Headquarters is located in the Sewell section of town, and the substation is located in the Centre City area.
The Mantua fire district is staffed 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year at the Fire Headquarters. Station 22 is dispatched by the Gloucester County Communications Center and responds annually to approximately 1,100 incidents. The Mantua Township Fire District operates one Class A engine (Engine 22), one 3,000-gallon water tender (Tender 22), one Ford F-250 brush truck (Brush 22), two Ford F-350 utility units (2217 and 2219), two similar rescue engines (Rescue 22 and Squad 22), and two ERVs (ERV 22 and ERV 22-1). The fire district provides mutual aid support to numerous Gloucester County fire departments and responds on regional structural task forces within Gloucester County and out of county as well as task forces for technical rescue, rescue task force operations, foam, and water tender response.
