Photos and Description by Lindsay Dye

Engine 2 began service with the Richardson (TX) Fire Department on June 12, 2018. It is built on an E-ONE Typhoon X cab and chassis and features a 12-inch split raised roof. Cab seating for six is provided along with an EMS cabinet installed on the back wall of the cab. A Dometic BliZZard Self-Contained HVAC Series Model #SC14K provides auxiliary climate control. Both cab and the single-axle HP 78 Sidestacker body are constructed of extruded aluminum, and hinged compartment doors are part of the body package. SCBA storage is located adjacent to the rear crew doors and rear wheel wells.

Power is provided by a 450-hp Cummins L9 engine and an Allison EVS 3000 five-speed transmission. A Harrison Model MCR 6-kW hydraulic generator is located in a dunnage pan on the left side.

The apparatus has a Hale Qmax single-stage 2,000-gpm pump (midship) and a UPF Poly III 470 gallon “T” tank. Dual 1¾-inch lines with 400 feet of hose (200 feet each) are located in the front bumper tray. Crosslays located behind the cab include two 1¾-inch (200 feet of hose each) and one 3-nch (200 feet) dry lay. The bed carries 1,000 feet of 5-inch LDH hose in the upper right rear of the bed. A Hannay booster reel with 100 feet of 1-inch hose is mounted on the upper right side of the body. Foam is provided by a Class 1 SmartFoam system with a 30-gallon foam cell. The foam system is plumbed to the two front bumper lines, both crosslays, and the booster reel.

The aerial is a rear-mount, 78-foot HP model constructed of welded, extruded aluminum with a steel waterway that features an Akron StreamMaster II electric monitor paired with an Akron Model 5177 electric nozzle. Aerial lighting includes Whelen Series 500 TIR6 LED lights (red lenses) on each side of the ladder tip; Light Rigid Industries E-2 Series LED lights located on the fly section; and red, white, and blue Luma-Bar Pathfinder LED strip lighting on both sides of the aerial. A complement of Alco-Lite ground ladders (10-foot folding, 14-foot roof, 16-foot roof, 28-foot two-section roof, and a 35-foot three-section roof) are stored in the two center-mounted ladder tunnels. Backboard storage is located in a vertical compartment adjacent to the pump panel.

The warning lights include 2 Whelen Mini Freedom IV 21.5 inch light bars located on the cab corners and Whelen M6 LED lights on the perimeter of the cab and body. Two Whelen Model L 31H Super LED beacons and Whelen Model B6LED lights are mounted on the rear of the body above the ladder tunnels. A Whelen Model TAM83 LED Traffic Advisor is mounted between the beacons.

Scene lighting is provided by Whelen Model PFP2 Pioneer Plus PFP2 LED lights on the brow and a Whelen Pioneer PFP2AC tripod light mount on the right rear of the cab. Audio warning devices include a Whelen Model 295SLSA1 electronic siren module and a Federal E-Q2B siren module. Both siren modules are connected to Federal Dynamax ES100 speakers with “E-ONE” grilles mounted through the front bumper.

Fire department training divisions should include some input from the mechanical division. As a mechanic, I can’t teach someone the proper way to put out a fire. I’m not trained for that. In the same breath, firefighters aren’t expected to know how the equipment they use works mechanically. Although firefighters don’t need to understand how to fix the equipment, a general understanding of how something works affects how they use it.
